A Very, Very Unofficial Guide to the Pokemon World (WIP)

Disclaimer: Though some of this runs off personal headcanon, this is meant to be a guide for both myself and others on the Pokemon World as it's seen in the games. Other folks are welcome to contribute.

At the same time, all information has been kept as vague as possible and is not meant to infringe on anime canon and other people's preferred headcanons.

Touya isn't a professor on any subjects either, so he may explain things about his world in ways that may not necessarily be true, but sounds easier for non-Poke'natives to understand.

What are Pokemon?

Pokemon are the creatures that make up most of the fauna in the world. Since not all species of Pokemon like to obey the laws of physics and rules in science as we OOCly know it, they are being summarized as magically empowered animals.

So what are Pokemon types?

A Pokemon type is the category (or categories) of magic that a Pokemon species is aligned to. Different types are strong and weak against others. And some species lines can change type as they evolve.

Are humans in the Pokemon world different?

Humans in the Pokemon world (Poke'natives) live in a dangerous world. However, Poke'natives have slight genetic differences that make them significantly sturdier and more difficult to injure, let alone kill.

Shrugging off fire attacks and 100,000 volts of electricity is superhuman by our standards.

Alongside this unnatural toughness... some rare individuals have been known to express incredible physical prowess, lifting weights that scale up to 3/5ths of a ton (600 lbs or 272.2 kg), and leaping from great heights with no injury.

What does everyone eat?

In addition to the large and unique variety of berries that grow here, they have the same worldwide diversity of fruits and vegetables that we're familiar with. Most people in the Pokemon world tend to be vegetarians.

This does not mean consuming Pokemon meat is completely unheard of, but with the very strict and gentle practices for putting them to sleep, the life of Pokemon is deeply respected and not sacrificed in excess.

Is there life that exists other than Pokemon?

Fauna that is not classified as Pokemon exist, but is rare. But the Pokemon World has infinite mysteries waiting to be solved! Like Ultra Beasts.

How do you get a Trainer's license?

The basics of Pokemon care is a required subject in elementary school, so education and safety are taken seriously.

Similar to the process of receiving a Driver's License, the young trainer-to-be must take a test. If they pass, they are registered to a trainer number and allowed from then on to purchase Pokeballs and travel away from home independently.

What are the minimum ages in all the regions to register?

This one is a bit tricky, since this will be based upon official art, with art from the remakes being used as source material over the originals. Once again, Touya's memory will not be reliable here and is not meant to infringe on the anime or other people's opinions...

In Kanto, the minimum trainer age is 10. In Johto, the minimum trainer age is 12. In Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova, the minimum trainer age is 13. For Kalos, the minimum trainer age is 15.

In Alola.... somewhere between 10 - 12, it is not yet confirmed.

(Bianca was initially held back from becoming a trainer by her father. So being the good friends they are, Touya and Cheren waited for her.)

How do Pokeballs operate?

When a Pokemon is caught, they're registered under the number on the trainer's license through the pokeball. This digital imprint usually protects the Pokemon from being captured within a different ball (snag balls from Orre are a result of criminal hacking). When they are released, this digital imprint is erased.

But don't ask Touya this. Even this information is a stretch from what he might know.
